5 Steps for Remote Learning Success

Studying at Home in the Time of COVID-19

Beginning in the spring of 2020, millions of students across the country adjusted to a new normal- conducting their schooling at home through distance, or remote learning. The transition to distance learning has been challenging, even difficult for some, but we are rising to the occasion, adjusting and innovating to meet this challenge. At TISOH, we strive to provide our students with a rich, fulfilling, truly immersive learning experience, albeit entirely remote for now. TISOH’s online programs and virtual class lectures are engaging, our online learning platform Brightspace is user-friendly and accessible 24/7/365, and our team of dedicated administrative staff and experienced, professional faculty are available to students for academic, professional, and personal support. The TISOH community is getting through this time together, and looking towards the future. Here are some of our team’s tips for successful remote learning, during the time of COVID-19, and beyond.

✓ Create a Dedicated Study Space

First things first, you need somewhere to get your work done, a space that is for schoolwork only. Creating a dedicated space to study and complete your schoolwork will allow you to focus, spend time effectively, and do your best work. Avoid cluttering your space and keep it well organized and stocked with the materials you need.

✓ A Schedule That Works For You

It’s important to establish a routine that works for you, even if it’s not an exact “schedule.” Daily schedules do not have to be rigidly defined, but they should provide a framework for your day that will keep you on task and efficient with your time. Dedicate a set time to your studies, and structure the rest of your day accordingly.

✓ Organization is Key

Remote learning makes organization more important than ever. You need a system to keep track of assignments, due dates, and other important information, whether you use a digital calendar, an app on your phone, or a traditional paper calendar or planner. Whichever system you choose, keep it up to date and current, so you always know exactly what is due and when.

✓ Know your Tech

Distance learning has meant students are now using computers more than ever: to complete coursework, receive instruction, share and submit documents, and communicate via email, discussion groups, and video meetings. Familiarize yourself with the technology you will be expected to be using so that you can use it effectively. TISOH students report our virtual Zoom sessions are engaging, and our online Brightspace platform is user-friendly, but if you need help, reach out! We have a team dedicated to supporting students through any challenges in adapting to remote online learning.

✓ Keep Connected

You may be at home studying, but you are not alone in your studies! As always, the TISOH community is here for you, and you have dedicated instructors and a cohort of peers who are here to work with you and support you. Throughout remote learning, TISOH has continued to offer a full range of student services and we have increased our offerings of virtual events, such as our Hangouts with Anthony, interactive virtual workshops, and special events featuring industry professionals. We urge you to stay connected with our TISOH community, and take advantage of any and all opportunities to connect with your teachers and classmates. Let’s stay engaged and stay connected, and we will work through this together.

At TISOH, we have been so proud of how our community has risen to this occasion, and we are looking towards the future. In Fall 2020, we plan to offer some classroom sessions on campus, while providing for physical distancing by limiting the number of students on campus. Our new LIVE Classroom + Remote Learning format will allow students to have the best of both worlds: attending some classroom sessions on campus while receiving other lectures at home remotely through scheduled live Zoom sessions. TISOH’s traditional 100% online learning format option is available as well. If you are a current TISOH student, or a prospective student, we want to assure you that you will have a safe, but still engaging and immersive experience at TISOH in the Fall. Give us a call at 702-374-0184 to learn more about all of the learning formats available to you, including our new LIVE Classroom + Remote Learning format.
